after a silver prototype, applied with two grooved scroll handles with pinched lower terminals, a fine trailed line around the lower body of the cup, the domed cover with a cushioned knop finial surmounted by a small ball, on a massive terraced foot, 33.5cm (a smaller bead or ball missing from the tip of the finial only) (2),

Footnotes

  • The shape of this rare piece mirrors that of English silver cups of the period, such as the example reproduced here from circa 1710. The glassmaker may have attempted to copy the decorative flourish seen on the bottom of the handles on some of these silver cups. For a related large, early glass cup with grooved handles, a terraced foot and a trailed line around the body see Percy Bate, English Table Glass, Pl. XXXV fig. 136. Terraced feet were used to support substantial shapes in English glass such as the well-known candelabra of similar date in the Victoria and Albert Museum which is also surmounted by a similar finial to the present lot, see Reino Liefkes, Glass, p. 96.
