of Cologne or Frechen type with a ropetwist handle, applied with a fine 'bartmann' face on the neck, the globular body embossed with several medallions, the front with a large crowned armorial shield dated at the top '1607', hung from straps inscribed 'DRINCK VND EST GODES NIT VERGEST NIT 1607' and 'DES HEREN VERT BLIBET IN EVICK ANMEN', flanked by faces with long pointed beards above further armorial medallions of Julich-Kleve-Berg dated 1606, the sides with two large portrait medallions of the Roman emperors Nero and Claudius within inscribed borders, glazed overall in brown with the relief decoration randomly splashed in cobalt blue, 35cm high, a pewter mount for a hinged lid around the handle (minor loss to the relief on one smaller armorial panel, a few fine superficial cracks in the lower part of the vessel),

Footnotes

  • A very similar example in the British Museum is illustrated by David Gaimster, German Stoneware 1200-1900, fig. 57. The arms on the front medallion are partially identified as Jülich-Kleve-Berg-Mark-Ravensberg and Moers, with Culemburg quartering Lecke, and a version of Orange-Nassau. The British Museum bellarmine has a strap handle and smaller medallions with the arms of England, whereas on the present example the arms of Jülich-Kleve-Berg are repeated. The rope handle on the present jug relates this to a group of Cologne bellarmines ranging in date from the 1590s through to 1613. Some of these are also splashed in blue. The portraits of Roman emperors with their confused inscriptions are likely to have been copied from Roman coins.
