Sold for £ 4,541 (US$ 5,580) inc. premium
An important Derby porter mug
circa 1820
of cylindrical form with an angular handle, well painted with a group of industrial buildings, a sign on the larger reading 'SOHO FOUNDRY, PEEL AND WILLIAMS', a boat on the canal in the foreground, the reverse with different buildings bearing the sign 'PHOENIX FOUNDRY, PEEL AND WILLIAMS', both scenes with the products of the foundry on display in the factory yard, including architectural ironwork and steam engine parts, within gilded neoclassical borders, 13cm, crown, crossed batons and D mark (crazed, starcrack to the base)

Footnotes

  • Peel, Williams and Peel was one of the most renowned engineering and millwright partnerships in Manchester. Although small in size by modern standards, such businesses were involved in the production of a wide range of goods, as can be seen by the products displayed in the foreground of both paintings. The mug represents a very rare depiction of the industrial landscape on English porcelain. The usual flowers or romanticised landscapes are very occasionally replaced by views of potteries and kilns but other industries are almost never represented. The circumstances resulting in the manufacture of this unique piece of Derby porcelain are not known.
