Footnotes

  • For an example of the metal prototype for this form, see Treasures from Snow Mountains. Gems of Tibetan Cultural Relics, Shanghai Museum, 2001, Catalogue no.74; and for a porcelain famille rose example with Buddhist emblems, see R.Kerr, Chinese Ceramics, p.115, no.101, where the author notes that the 'official ware' ewers were produced for Buddhist altars in the palaces and temples of Beijing and Chengde, the Qing court's summer retreat in the hills north of Beijing, and that the style of the ewer suggests that it was used on a Buddhist altar of the Tibetan-inspired Lamaist sect which delighted in exotic monster decorations and beaded borders
