18th Century

Sold for £ 17,925 (US$ 22,160) inc. premium
A fine and large Chinese mirror painting of an Imperial hunting scene
18th Century
Finely painted with the Qianlong Emperor seated on rockwork beneath an overhanging gnarled pine tree beside his standing groom and saddled horse, the young Emperor wearing dark-blue Court robes emblazoned with dragons and gesturing to his groom with his left hand, his face with gentle smile framed by a red hat, the groom wearing a simple grey tunic and carrying a bow and brace of game on his back, the elegant white horse with richly-decorated saddle cloth and bridle hung with large red pendent tasselles, the later gilt-wood rococo-style frame extensively carved and pierced with scrolling acanthus leaves,
The painting 77 x 46.5cm.(30 1/4in. x 18 1/4in)

Footnotes

  • The suggestion that the young elegant regal figure can be identified with the Qianlong Emperor is based on comparison with other portraits of him, especially those from the National Palace Museum and elsewhere recently exhibited in Scotland. However, it is only fair to note equally that the only apparent logic for reproducing an informal portrait of the Emperor on a glass painting would be either that the mirror was intended to be kept in China within Court walls, or that it was intended for presentation to a distinguished foreigner. It is most unlikely that a portrait of the Emperor would be used as a staple design for glass painters in Canton decorating Western mirror panels for the Export trade
