Sold for £ 1,912 (US$ 2,321) inc. premium
A pair of ewers modelled as Montgolfier Balloons,

Footnotes

  • For the flight of Montgolfier's Balloon in Venice on April 15th, 1784, see the work by Giacomo Guardi [1764-1835] offered by Sotheby's [Important Old Master Paintings/28-1-1999/lot 327]. Aspects of Montgolfier's work were commissioned by Francesco Pesaro, sometime after the discovery of Hydrogen Gas in 1760.

In 1782-83 Joseph [1740-1810] and Jacques [1745-1799] Montgolfier had filled paper bags with heated air; the bags had ascended, leading both brothers to the conclusion that the experiment could be repeated on a larger scale. One of the Montgolfier's earliest exhibitions took place at Annonay [the Montgolfier family home] near Lyon on June 5th, 1783 when a balloon covered the distance of two kilometers, reaching an estimated altitude of about 1800 Metres.

P.J.Donnelly summarised the arrival of the Dehua ewer in Japan: 'This ewer was later copied in Japan, for examples are known with a map of Japan on the spherical portion in the pale enamel colours of the nineteenth-century famille rose palette, with the legends in Japanese.'
