A Rare Peter Lealand Transit Theodolite, English, circa 1830,
signed P Lealand, 23 Phoenix Street, Somers Town, London with silvered compass rose, horizontal circle of degrees, verniers and vertical half circle of degrees, two tangential screw adjustments, two bubble levels and two interchangeable telescopes, in fitted mahogany case, 15in. (38 in.) high

  • Peter Lealand worked between 1826 until 1841 when he joined his brother-in-law in partnership to produce some of the best compound microscopes produced in the 19th century. This theodolite features some of the design qualities displayed on their microscopes however instruments made and signed by Peter Lealand are very rare.
    The address of 23 Phoenix Street, Somers Town is not recorded in Clifton, G. Directory of British Scientific Instruments Makers 1550-1851 however Peter father lived close by at 24 Clarendon Street, Somers Town.

25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
