1967 Norton 745cc Atlas
Registration no. MTH 817E
Frame no. 20/117444
Engine no. 20/117444
First seen in prototype form in 1962, the 745cc Atlas represented the biggest stretch yet applied to Norton's parallel twin. Built for export only initially - home market deliveries commenced late in 1964 - the Alas was fundamentally a larger-engined version of the existing 650SS, using the same featherbed frame/Roadholder fork cycle parts. The arrival of the similar-capacity but Isolastic-framed Commando in 1967 spelled the end for the Atlas, which disappeared from the range towards the end of 1968. Almost the last of Norton's traditional featherbed-framed twins (the 650 lasted into 1970) this muscular road-burner is today highly sought after by collectors. In present ownership for the past 30 years, this exceptional matching-numbers example is totally original with the exception of the fuel tank's traditional silver paint finish (originally red). The machine was used for annual trips to the Isle of Man TT before being taken off the road around 20 years ago and placed in dry storage. It subsequently spent many years on display at the Newburn Motor Museum near Newcastle-upon-Tyne, returning to its owner's care a few years ago and being re-commissioned in 2002. Taxed and MoT'd, it was ridden in the Beamish Reliability Run that year and has not been used since. The machine has covered just 13,401 miles from new and remains in generally excellent condition. Offered with Swansea V5.
