Footnotes

  • Most Moroccan carpets are comparable in their layout and proportions to the so called 'Safavid Portuguese' carpets and take their prime influence in motifs from 18th century Anatolian, specifically Konya, rugs. In this piece it can be seen predominantly in the Konya type borders of serrated flowerheads. The oblong size of this carpet suited the room sizes of Moroccan houses, which were based around a central courtyard until fashions in architecture changed in the late 19th century. Although the majority of the design is typical of Rabat carpets of this date, which exhibit a fairly standardised pattern, in this example we find a variation of the 'Tulip' panels replaced by a the hooked octagons found in Kashgai rugs.

A later example was sold in these rooms, 28th Jan 2003, Lot 90.
