Footnotes

  • An old manuscript label verso reads: 'Election for West Norfolk, The Member Elected - Bagge of Stradsett v. Shute of Pickenham. It was said to him said "He that would West Norfolk win, must in Marshland first begin".'
William Bagge was MP for the Western Division of Norfolk in 1837 and was returned in 1841, 1847 and 1865. Although it is not clear which of his first three victories this painting celebrates, archives confirm that the church clock was moved from the position shown in the painting to a higher point on the tower in 1856.
