1935 Bentley 3 1/2 Litre Two-Door Coupe Coachwork by Barker
Registration no. BAL 276
Chassis no. B45 CW
The continuation of the Bentley name as a major part of the British motor industry was assured following the acquisition of the financially troubled Bentley Motors Ltd by Rolls-Royce Ltd in 1931. It was 1933 before the new ‘Silent Sports Car’ was announced, developed from the experimental Rolls-Royce 18hp Peregrine chassis and with an all-new six-cylinder, overhead valve engine. The Bentley sporting tradition was maintained, the new cars having a top speed of 90mph, but now with a new silence, directly attributable to Rolls-Royce engineering. As a tireless long distance tourer the new ‘Silent Sports Car’ had few peers and even W.O. Bentley acknowledged that the 3 1/2 litre model was the finest car ever to bear his name.

Barkers were commissioned to provide the bespoke coachwork for chassis no.B45CW for its first owner, Herbert J Smith, who took delivery in January 1935. In 1961 this car came into the present family ownership and although it has not been on the road for over thirty years it has been regularly started and always garaged. A recent major overhaul by Messrs Fiennes Engineering with bills totalling in excess of £36,000 has included a major engine overhaul including the fitting of new cylinder head, pistons, rods, bearings and valves and the clutch has been renewed. The handsome Barker two door coupé aluminium coachwork is in generally good condition as is the chromework although the blue livery would benefit from refreshing. The blue leather interior is nicely matured. Particularly attractive features of this car are the fitted wheel discs, dummy pram irons to the coachwork and rear-mounted spares. Originality has been carefully maintained by successive owners and here is a car of undoubted integrity and charm, benefiting from significant recent expenditure and a most worthy project for completion. B45CW comes with a Swansea V5 registration document and old style log book together with copies of bills for recent restoration work.
