1955 BMA 1 1/2hp Electric Hazelcar
Registration no. JPN 149
Chassis no. 371-3307-1021
Throughout the 20th Century manufacturers experimented with the electric car and the BMA Hazelcar was just one such experiment, manufactured in Hove, Sussex, on a very small scale in the mid-1950’s. Powered by a 1 1/2hp electric motor it had a top speed of about 20mph and the original battery range was 50-60 miles per charge. The aluminium panelled body on a tubular steel frame was mounted on a steel chassis but the high price of £535 for such a diminutive vehicle undoubtedly impacted adversely upon sales, only seven cars being built, one of which was Ford 8-engined.
This car was acquired in 1974 from its lady owner who used the car as her daily runabout, transporting her three children with ease. It was resprayed in its present silver/grey livery in 1984, retains its tan Rexine seats and has a maroon hood. This rare survivor, perhaps the only survivor, of the marque is offered as an apparently complete car, to original specification in all major respects, for restoration. It comes with a Swansea V5 registration document recording the chassis number allocated by the L.V.L.O. in 1983.
