Footnotes

  • We are grateful to Alan Stubbs for identifying the sitter in the present portrait on the basis of comparison with portraits by Sir Peter Lely (National Portrait Gallery) and William Wissing (Viscount Dillon collection). Barbara Villiers (later Palmer, after her marriage to Roger Palmer) became Charles II's mistress in 1660 and in 1670 was created Duchess of Cleveland in her own right. She held great political influence at court, where she trafficked in the sale of offices, until she was supplanted in the King's affections by Louise de Kerouaille in 1674.
