Lot 1014
c1938 Atco 98cc Junior Trainer

£ 2,000 - 3,000
US$ 2,700 - 4,000
c1938 Atco 98cc Junior Trainer
Following the introduction of the Driving Test in 1935, greater emphasis was placed on knowledge of the Highway Code and road safety generally. Charles H Pugh Ltd, better known for their horticultural machinery and more specifically their distinctive green lawn mowers, designed the Atco Junior Trainer for use in schools for demonstrations in car handling and road safety. They were fitted with the ubiquitous Villiers 98cc, two stroke, petrol engines and boasted a top speed of 10mph, with just one forward gear and reverse.

This is a rare survivor, the subject of an older restoration and traditionally finished in Atco green livery with red upholstery. In the hands of the present owner since 1968, we are informed that both of his sons cut their motoring teeth on this machine. (V.C.C. members may recognise Simon and Miles in the photograph, c1970) Condition is generally good although careful recommissioning will be required following a long period of rest. What better Christmas present for the young enthusiast who can learn the basics of car mechanics and control, while perhaps sympathetically restoring this piece of motoring history? It also comes with a spare engine.
