Footnotes

  • Charles, third son of the Holy Roman Emperor, Leopold II, was adopted on the death of his father in 1792, by his aunt, Maria Christina and her husband Albert of Saxe-Teschen, who were childless. He was a brilliant military commander, but often conflicted with his brother, Roman Emperor Francis II. From 1801-4 he was High Master of the Order of the Teutonic Knights. He was reinstated as Field Marshall in 1805 and successfully commanded the Austrian force against Napoleon at the Battle of Aspern (1809). After his retirement from service in 1810, he married Princess Henrietta of Nassau-Weilburg (1815) by whom he had six children. His "adoptive" parents left him a huge fortune, including the Albertina Collection.
