Footnotes

  • John Chester was a holder of extensive lands in Co. Louth, Ireland. He was descended from one of two scions of the Chesters of Chicheley Hall in Northamptonshire. The family sailed to Ireland to seek their fortune but were shipwrecked at the mouth of the Boyne River, Co. Louth. After settling in Drocheda, they went into the wool trade and invested in land with their profits. By the middle of the 19th century, they were the biggest land owners in Co. Louth.
The name died out in the early 20th century with the advent of seven Chester sisters, but no son.
