  • The present lot was painted to celebrate the marriage of John Spottiswoode (1741-1805), which took place on the 10th June, 1779. He married Margaret Penelope, daughter of William Strahan. Spottiswoode worked as a solicitor in Sackville Street, London. His Grandson, William (1825-1883), became the President of the Royal Society and is buried in Westminster Abbey.

25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
