  • Charlotte Gough married John Palmer in 1768, two years before their portraits were painted by Smart. She was the daughter of Sir Henry Gough, 1st Bt. of Edgbaston of Warwicks in 1768. Her husband, Sir John Palmer, 5th Bt. (1735-1817), was M.P. for co. Leicester 1765-1780 of Carlton, Northamptonshire. They had three sons.
    The portrait by Smart of Charlotte's husband was sold at Christie's, London, 16th November, 1976, lot 75 and then again, Christie's 14th October 1998, lot 67 (as part of the Walter and Gertrude Rappolt Collection).

27.5% on the first £10,000 of the hammer price;
25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
