Footnotes

  • A fine archive of original albumen photographs recording the important archaeological surveys carried out by Arthur Bulleid and Harold St. George Gray at the Somerset Lake Villages, Iron Age settlements. The first Village was discovered near Glastonbury by Bulleid, a local doctor and enthusiastic amateur archaeologist, in 1892. Under the administration of the Glastonbury Antiquarian Society Bulleid explored the site between 1892 and 1898, then 1904-1907 with the active involvement of Harold St. George Gray, formerly assistant to Lt. General Pitt Rivers. The photographs, seemingly by St. George Gray and W. Tully, depict all aspects of the dig, including images of Bullied, dig-team leader Tom Paul and his workers at work, exposed excavations at every stage, and artefacts found.
