1969 Pilgrim Sumo Roadster
Chassis no. RIL980002BARE
Sussex-based kit-car builder Pilgrim manufactures sportscars in a variety of classic styles, the Sumo being influenced by the legendary AC Cobra. Introduced in 1987, the Sumo offered enthusiasts a less expensive route to 'Cobra' ownership, using Ford Cortina engines and running gear. The Mk2 brought with it Ford Granada independent rear suspension and the option of Ford V6 engines or, later, the Rover V8. In 1993 the current (Mk3) Sumo was introduced in two forms, one using Ford Sierra running gear, the other Jaguar. The steel chassis combines ladder frame, spaceframe and monocoque construction techniques, while the bodywork is hand crafted in glassfibre. Like many similar vehicles the Sumo is available for self-build or as a 'turn key' car, with a wide range of options to individual customer choice.
Completely rebuilt in 1998 by Pilgrim Cars' Managing Director Mr D Tanner, this lefthand-drive Sumo comes with Pilgrim Cars' correspondence confirming its specification, EU conformity, etc. Its specification includes glassfibre bodywork, 5.7-litre Chevrolet V8 engine, five-speed manual gearbox, all-round disc brakes and aluminium three-piece wheels: 7" front and 8.5" rear. Offering the prospect of Cobra-style motoring at a most reasonable price, the vehicle has covered 10,000 kilometres since completion and is offered with Belgian registration papers.
