A very fine James II silver-gilt tumbler cup
Maker's mark PM between two stars (Jackson's Revised Edition P.138), 1686,
of heavy gauge, base inscribed with scratchweight "9" below "oz", one side inscribed "The Gift of Sr. Thomas Rawlinson Kt. Alderman and one of ye. Sherifs of London & Middlesex Anno Domini 1686", the other side inscribed in the 18th Century but in a very similar hand "The Gift of Ms. Anne Tayler to Mrs. Honour Rawlinson",
7cm. high, 9.5cm. diameter, 9oz.

Footnotes

  • Sir Thomas Rawlinson (1647-1708) was Lord Mayor of London, the son of a London vintner who kept the Mitre tavern in Fenchurch Street but whose original family seat was in Lancashire. Thomas followed his father's business and became a freeman of the Vintner's company on 12th October 1670, elected master 1687 and again in 1696. Knighted at Windsor on 6th August 1686, he was soon after appointed a sheriff of London and Middlesex. He was Colonel of the trained bands in 1690 and Colonel of the White regiment from 1705 as well as President of Bridewell and Bethlehem hospitals.
