base engraved with scratchweight "6oz 12 dtt", circular with flared lip and "C" shaped handle affixed below rim, front engraved with a lady's arms within plumed mantling, fully marked around side, the handle further marked underneath with a lion passant,
6.5cm. high, 10.6cm. diameter. 6oz.

Footnotes

  • With regard to the arms, the dexter coat could be for several families including St. John and Clinton. The sinister coat is for Vaughan of London.
Compare this with the smaller mug of 1675 in the collection of "English Silver in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston", vol. 1, P. 161 item 73 which has a completely different handle. Very few cups of the design appear to have survived. Michael Clayton mentions a small mug of everted beaker form the strap handle riveted to one side, made in 1675 on P.187 of his "Collector's Dictionary of the Silver and Gold of Great Britain and North America".
