"Perhaps the outstanding thought from extensive driving of the Bentley MkVI built by the world's premier car manufacturers, Rolls-Royce, is that it has no single predominant feature but gains its unique position from a combination of superbly matched qualities that raise it above the level of other cars." - The Autocar magazine, April 1950.
Although Rolls-Royce retained a separate chassis for its immediately post-war models, the company broke with the coachbuilt tradition by introducing standard bodywork. The 'standard steel' body was available at first only on the MkVI Bentley - the equivalent Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn not arriving until 1949 - though customers could still opt for a coachbuilt alternative if they so desired. Other notable features were independent front suspension and hydraulic front brakes, while powering the range was a new 4,257cc (later 4,566cc) six-cylinder engine featuring inlet-over-exhaust valvegear.
This 4.2-litre, standard steel MkVI was in the previous owner's possession for 39 years, undergoing an extensive body-off restoration in 1998. The latter work included chassis stove enamelling, replacement of cylinder liners, suspension and braking system overhaul, exhaust renewal, full interior re-trim and body repaint. On completion the car was placed in storage, covering just 300-or-so miles before being acquired by the vendor in 2000 and re-commissioned: invoices for this and the major 1998 restoration are on file. Finished in Connaught Green with tan leather interior featuring its original, working-order radio, the car has covered c.2,000 miles in present ownership and is presented in generally very good condition. Front and rear seat belts and a full-flow oil filter are the only listed deviations from factory specification. The vehicle is offered with copy Jack Barclay service invoice (1955), Broughton's of Cheltenham condition report (2000), old-style logbook, current road fund licence, MoT to April 2004 and Swansea V5.
