1926 Chrysler E80 Imperial Rumble Seat Roadster
Registration no. YR 1344
Chassis no. EW416H
Engine no. E5120
Produced at the old Chalmers plant in Detroit and introduced in January 1924, Walter P Chrysler's first automobile was an innovative, medium priced, six-cylinder car of better-than-average performance, as numerous motor sport successes would soon demonstrate. Offering a $5,000 specification for under $1,500, the Chrysler featured hydraulic brakes, aluminium pistons, full-pressure lubrication and a tubular front axle, and was able to reach 70mph comfortably. Not surprisingly, it was an outstanding success, 32,000 being sold in the car's first year of production. The range soon expanded to encompass a 'four', a smaller 'six' and the fabulous Imperial, the latter larger and more expensive than the original and intended to compete with the likes of Cadillac, Lincoln and Packard. The Imperial boasted a powerful 288cu in (4.7-litre) sidevalve six-cylinder engine coupled to a three-speed gearbox, and was outwardly distinguishable by its fluted radiator and bonnet, a feature legally challenged by Vauxhall and discontinued in 1929.
Dating from the first year of Imperial production, 'YR 1344' was sold new and first registered in the UK in October 1926, and has a dealer plate fixed to the dashboard. A righthand-drive, two/four-passenger Rumble Seat Roadster model, it is fitted with chromed wire wheels and a full set of the correct fluted lights including four sidelights and two driving lights. The radiator and brightwork are nickel plated, and a golf club door is fitted into the body's offside. Paintwork is maroon and black, with cream leather interior complemented by a beige hood. This car is a rare example of a landmark American automobile, painstakingly restored to original specification and in the present ownership since 1985. It has toured extensively across Europe, taking part in numerous Alpine Rallies and other events, and is presented in very good condition throughout. The vehicle is offered with original sales document, parts list, sundry spare parts, road fund licence to November 2003, MoT to December 2003 and Swansea V5.
