Footnotes

  • Published:
    W. Simpson, The Seat of the War in the East, 2nd series, London, 1855, plate XL.

The Cape Chersonese lighthouse was located close to the great Russian base at Sebastopol and Simpson’s view offered here shows a Turkish supply brig which has grounded ashore being pulled off the beach by three boats manned by allied sailors.

Each longboat is depicted wearing its national flag thereby implying not only the international co-operation of the rescue mission itself but also an allegory of the causes of the Crimean War whereby Britain, France and Sardinia went to the aid of Turkey in the face of Russian aggression.
