Rowland Hill:
An important collection of personal possessions and memorabilia relating to Sir Rowland Hill KCB – Postal Reformer and the inventor of Uniform Penny Postage, comprising:

A rosewood travelling dressing-case, the lid with inlaid brass nameplate engraved "Rowland Hill", the interior fitted with eight silver topped bottles engraved with the crest of Sir Rowland Hill (a laurel wreath out of a three turret castle - hallmarked London 1863), the lid with fold-up mirror, and with sliding side jewellery drawer.

A silver watch with enamel Roman dial, moon hands and engine turned case hallmarked for London 1861, the cuvette bearing an engraved inscription “This watch formerly belonging to Thomas Wright Hill, was bequeathed by his son Sir Rowland Hill KCB to the latters grandson Arthur Fellows, August 27th 1879”. The movement signed E.I. Dent, but with balance, spring and all wheels lacking.

Books from Rowland Hills Library, including “The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe” bound in blue cloth with gold embossing, signed inside in two places by Rowland Hill, "A Legall Vindication of the Liberties of England against Illegall Taxes" by William Prynne (1649) rebound and with some damage, and two others.

Miscellaneous items including a letter dated 1684 (no outer cover) from Thomas Wright (great-great grandfather of Rowland Hill), together with a rat-tailed silver spoon engraved “TW 1724”; a leather purse, two letter seals, and two later stamp boxes (one marked “Sterling”).

A red case containing two Bruce Castle Medals (one gilt, and one silver), each inscribed on reverse “R. Lawford”.

The written-up display collection relating to Rowland Hill and his postal reforms, including a carte-de-viste photograph of Rowland Hill seated at a desk, (signed by him on the front and reverse), an 1866 signed letter, 1860 (c.) envelope signed by Rowland Hill sent without stamp to an address in London, 1812 Caution Notice sent from the G.P.O. to solicitors against unlawfully conveying letters, a page from a scrap-book with Whiting Treasury essay embossed in blue (damaged), 1840 2d.blue used on cover from London to Harwich, 1840 1d.Mulready lettersheets used (2, one with advert inside), 1890 Postal Jubilee – with postal stationery items (16) showing special cancellations, Elliot caricature envelope unused, and chromo-lithographed Xmas card, and various modern commemorative items.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Buyer's Premium Rates
27.5% on the first £10,000 of the hammer price;
25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
