the gilt three quarter plate movement signed Arnold Chas. Frodsham, 84 Strand, London, ADFmsz 04258, with Nicole's hand set mechanism, engraved cock to a jewelled endstone over an overcoiled blued steel hairspring to a cut and compensated bimetallic balance and double screwed chatons, the signed and numbered enamel Roman dial with centre chronograph hand reading against an outer scale divided to fifths of a second, with subsidiary seconds at IX, in a heavy case engraved with a coat of arms with the motto 'Labor Omnia Vincit' and 'Hudson Scholars 1888', the rear cover with HOH monogram, hallmarked for Adolph Nicole, London 1870 55mm

Footnotes

  • It is assumed that this watch was given as a Royal Prize, as the shield engraved to the rear is that of Prince Albert, with the crown of the Queen above; though this is a mystery as Prince Albert died in 1862 and this watch dates to 1888. Presumably the recipient would have been Adelaide Ecepitall whose name is engraved in a banner between 'Hudson Scholars', another banner below in Latin reads as 'work conquers all'.
