Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Estate of Mr Albert R.Olsen, Newington, Connecticut (on loan to the Wadsworth Atheneum, New Haven, CT, During 1998 and 1999).

The subject of a fan-bearing Parisienne – here identified as Mme. Blanche d’Honcourt - attending a masked ball appears in a series of related works that Mme. Florence Valdes-Forain dates from 1885. The same pose is repeated in large oil composition now in the Pushkin Museum, a small grisaille presently in a private collection in Paris and a gouache in the Musee Bemberg, Toulouse.

The unusually large format and high degree of finish, as well as the identity of the sitter, in the present work suggests that it may not have been a study for the Pushkin work, but rather a presentation drawing for a close friend.
