Footnotes

  • Executed circa 1895.

This work is sold with a photographic certificate of authenticity from Dr. Margreet Nouwen, dated Berlin, 21 June 2003. We are also grateful for her kind assistance with the catalogue entry.

At the time that this drawing was executed, Liebermann spent much of his time during the summer months at Zandvoort. The study most probably depicts the expanse of sand dunes near to this coastal village. During his study sojourns in Holland the artist is well known for having filled many a sketchbook with variations of the surrounding landscape.

In view of its small size and the spontaneity of execution, where the artist has used the broad side of the charcoal stick to describe within a few strokes the undulating landscape, the present drawing evidently comes from such a sketchbook. A girl is depicted walking against the wind through the dunes. Liebermann concentrates on the rhythm within the uneven terrain, the distribution of light and shade, and the flapping of the girl's skirt. Erich Hancke, Liebermann's biographer, describes the meaning that the dunes had for the artist and how he tried to bring a personal mood into these landscape sketches,

'He's very fond of picturing the dunes. he draws them bright in the white light of noon or gloomy under a heavy rain cloud. Deserted from people or having an even more lonely effect with a single person or a swaying farm cart.'
