Footnotes

  • Sir Nigel Gresley's famous A3 Pacifics evolved from the original designs for the GNR circa 1922. They were the first Pacifics put into service by the Great Northern and when the 1927 built locomotives were rebuilt they became the standard main line locomotives of the LNER. Named principally after famous racehorses, the first of the new class No. 4472 was named 'Flying Scotsman'. 'Windsor Lad' was the eleventh locomotive built in this series and worked express trains from Kings Cross to the North throughout its life. The A4 class developed in the 1930s was ostensibly a streamlined version of the developed A3. Only the 'Flying Scotsman' remains in preservation, thanks to the foresight of Alan Pegler in the 1960s.
