While the kit offered here is not so advanced as the last, it nevertheless contains a US-made reproduction chassis formerly owned by Lee Gohlicke, marque authority and author of the "Illustrated Mercedes-Benz Buyers Guide" and many new and original components which include an original steering box and column, new unmachined crankcase, sump and supercharger, an incomplete front axle assembly, a rear axle housing and a new unmachined gearbox. There is also a new radiator complete with core and a pair of new supercharger rotors. A full list of components included in this lot is available on request.
The "S" Series Mercedes were the work of Ferdinand Porsche, who succeeded Gottlieb Daimler’s son Paul as chief designer of the newly-amalgamated Mercedes-Benz organisation in the mid-1920s. Stemming from the Mercedes company’s experience with aircraft superchargers during the Great War, the Mercedes system of supercharging involves a clutched blower that forced air into the carburettor and which was only called into action when ultimate performance was required. The eerie wail of a Mercedes supercharger is one that is still capable of sending a tingle down the spine of any enthusiast.
Only 102 examples of the "SS" Mercedes were built in 1928-9, and the potential of the model was shown when Thomas "Scrap" Thistlethwayte made the fastest lap (74.39 mph) in the 1928 Ulster Tourist Trophy. Thistlethwayte also made fastest lap (83.8 mph) in the 1929 Irish Grand Prix before retiring with a blown gasket.
The driver whose reputation was really made by the type S Mercedes was Rudy Caracciola, who gained a well-deserved reputation for driving the powerful supercharged cars in the rain. Driving a Mercedes SS, Caracciola won the 1929 Tourist Trophy race and defeated a team of three "Blower" Bentleys; the winning car was subsequently acquired by Earl Howe, who made fastest lap in the 1930 Ulster TT with it.
