Choson Dynasty, each panel [79 x 18in.] decorated with narrative scenes depicting processions of envoys, officials, scholars, woman and children beside an inscription [severe damage]
Footnotes
The late Choson Dynasty saw an increase in screen painting, produced for Korea's court and aristocracy; narrative scenes of diplomatic missions and Royal banquets were popular. In the latter case screens are known for both Emperor Kojong's 50th Birthday [1901] and Queen Sinjong's 80th Birthday [1887]. Another popular banquet subject was the Confucian theme of General Gou-Ziyu's feast ['Korea Art and Archaeology' by Jane Portal refers; see also Christie's New York 26-4-1995/lot 72 for a ten-leaf example of this]. The story here, however, is a typical Pyongsaeng-to or pictorial biography, also Confucian in principle, and showing the suggested ideal for a Sadaebu [Scholar bureaucrat] from the cradle to wise old age. Each panel represents a significant step in the Scholar's career of birth, marriage, and success at climbing the Civil Service ladder. The last panel commemorates the Sadaebu's long and fruitful marriage [cf.Sotheby's New York, 13-9-1999/lot 67 for an example with similar iconography].
