1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Roadster
Registration no. GVS 857
Chassis no. 12104220022491
Launched alongside the road-going 300SL, the 190SL was effectively a simplified, four-cylinder roadster with much of the charisma of the bigger-engined sports tourer, using a tuned, twin carburettor derivative of the 1897cc power unit also seen in less potent guise in the firm’s saloon cars. Dry-sump lubrication with an oil cooler was another departure from touring practice. The roadster coachwork of the 190SL was, remarked the Autocar. "most agreeably proportioned", a judgement with which it would be difficult to argue. Suspension was independent all round (coil and wishbone at the front, swing axles at the rear) and the brake drums had "turbine blade" cooling fins like the 300SL. Available in right-hand drive form from October 1955, the 190SL was available into 1963 and a total of 25,881 were produced.
This particular right-hand drive example, which has the desirable extra emergency third seat fitted behind the front seats, was the subject of total restoration to authentic condition in the mid 1990s, which included a back-to-bare metal rebuild of the bodywork which was refinished in white Glasurit synthetic finish, with new chromework, glass, blue Connolly hide interior trim and a genuine Mohair hood. The transmission was rebuilt and the electrics thoroughly checked and replaced as necessary.
Purchased by the vendor from Brooks’ Goodwood auction in July 1996 when it had covered approximately 500 miles since restoration, it has led a pampered existence since, being used only for occasional Summer drives and is offered with owner’s manual, Swansea V5 document and current MoT certificate expiring June 2004.
