1961 Lotus-Ford 20 Formula Junior Racing Single-Seater
Chassis no. 20J-926
Historic Formula Junior is one of the most exciting, friendly and affordable of all single-seater motor racing classes, and this Lotus 20 represents an ideal ‘starter car’ for anyone aspiring to join in the fun. The car is understood to have had an American market racing history, and it is offered here by an American owner. Finished in green with red leather trimmed cockpit seat, it is powered by a modified Ford 105E-based 4-cylinder production engine, driving through the standard, well-known and reliable Hewland Mark V transaxle transmission.

The Lotus 20 was the class car of the International Formula Junior field in 1961, when Lotus launched it as the latest development of the rear-engined Lotus single-seater series and drivers such as Trevor Taylor and Peter Arundell – who became acknowledged as ‘The King of Formula Junior’ in 1962-63, proved that on track the Type 20 performed every bit as beautifully as it looked. The Lotus Type 20’s sleek glassfibre bodywork in contrast to that of the Type 18 was lower, slightly narrower and infinitely more ‘slippery’ aerodynamically than its square-cut predecessor. Furthermore the Type 20 such as this fine example was absolutely tailor-made for Formula Junior competition although a sister Type 20B was offered with disc brakes and 1500cc Ford power as standard for Formule Libre and American Formula B competition. Most notably, the FJ Type 20 was offered with the expensive option of disc brakes instead of drums.

We are advised that this Lotus 20’s engine has been fitted recently with a "new bottom end" and bills for recent expenditure upon its preparation are included in the accompanying documentation file. From Vintage Racing Services Incorporated these bills total more than $9,800 US.
The car is offered with UK taxes paid.
