This technically interesting Clubmans Formula car was originally constructed in 1969 by Essex garage owner Barry Flegg using a Lotus 7 Series 2 as the basis. Named after Tim Goss's Lotus '7X', the car featured independent rear suspension incorporating an Elan differential and Lotus 61 hub carriers, and was powered by a Broadspeed-tuned 1,000cc Ford 'screamer' engine. Driven by Barry Flegg, it won the 1,000cc class of the Gregor Grant Clubmen's Championship in 1970 (Tim Goss in '7X' won the 1,600cc class). Around 1971 Barry Flegg sold the car to Malcolm Smith, who sold it in 1972 to Leyland employees Tony Winter and Peter Rigby. Following an accident, the car was rebuilt with a new chassis and an alloy body of its owners' design, using the running gear from 7Y. The chassis was stove enamelled at Chevron cars and set up at Red Rose Motors. Renamed 'PTP', the car was fitted with a 1,600cc Ford engine. After 2-3 seasons, Peter Rigby sold his share to Tony Winter. The vendor bought the car, less engine and gearbox, from Martin Cowell. Totally rebuilt in 2002, it has been fitted with a 1,300cc Ford cross-flow dry-sump engine and Ford four-speed gearbox, and is described by the vendor as being in superb condition. An interesting piece of Lotus history.
