Footnotes

  • A pair of paintings (on copper, 25.3 x 31.1 cm. and 24.7 x 31.1 cm.) by the same hand was sold at Christie's, London, 9th July 1993 (as Jean Tassel).
Leclerc worked in Italy, where he was influenced by Pietro della Vecchia, who appears to have inspired the hatted figure in the present composition. A similar figure appears again in Jan Lys's Lute Player (Private collection, St. Barthélemy, Guadaloupe). Jan Lys (1595-1629) was working in Rome at the same time as Leclerc and also fell under the influence of della Vecchia. Leclerc himself was in turn an influence on Jean Tassel (1608-1667).
