    Admiral of the Fleet Sir Charles Madden, G.C.B., O.M., G.C.V.O., K.C.M.G. (1862-1935) joined the Royal Navy as a Cadet in 1875 and, by dint of his abilities, ended his career at the very pinnacle of the ‘Senior Service’. Commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant in 1881, he saw his first action in the Egyptian War of 1882 and was rapidly promoted until, by 1910, he was Fourth Lord of the Admiralty. Rear-Admiral commanding the 2nd and 3rd Cruiser Squadrons of the Home Fleet from 1912-14, he was present at Jutland as Chief of Staff to the Commander-in-Chief (Jellicoe) and then served as 2nd in command of the Grand Fleet from 1917-19. Subsequently C.-in-C., Atlantic Fleet, 1919-22, he was First and Principal A.D.C. to the King, 1922-24, being made Admiral of the Fleet when that appointment was concluded, and served as First Lord of the Admiralty and Chief of the Naval Staff from 1927 until his retirement in 1930. The recipient of many honours and awards, both British and foreign, he was one of the most influential officers in the Royal Navy during the critical period of the Great War and its immediate aftermath.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Buyer's Premium Rates
27.5% on the first £2,500 of the hammer price;
25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £2,500 up to and including £300,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £300,000 up to and including £3,000,000;
and 13.9% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £3,000,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
