Footnotes

  • The enigmatically named “Ruckers” was built at Shields, on the Tyne, in 1798 and intended for the West Indian trade. Measured at 459 tons and carrying a full ship rig, she was a large vessel by contemporary standards and her first owner Mr. Campbell ran her out of London to Grenada. Subsequently owned and commanded by Captain W. Soper who continued her West Indian run to Grenada, her last owner – Marshall of London – had her re-rigged as a barque and changed her regular destination to Halifax and the maritime provinces of Canada. She is last recorded in 1837 when she was stated to have been “abandoned”, presumably at sea in a sinking condition, the usual explanation of this notation.
