Lot 268
An interesting bronze Bowl
Persia, 13th Century

£ 2,000 - 3,000
US$ 2,400 - 3,600
An interesting bronze Bowl
Persia, 13th Century
with concave sided body and tall flaring foot, incised below the rim between two impressed bands with a continuous frieze of inscription against foliage, tinned
22.9 cm. diam.

Footnotes

  • The inscription reads: "Perpetual Glory and Prosperity and Good turn of Fortune and Happiness and Well-being and Generosity and Grace (of God) and Gratitude and Ease and Mercy and Power (?) and Glory for ever and ...and Long-life to its owner".

This lot is from a series of bowls cast after ceramic form. It relates to a bowl in the Museo Civico Medievale, Bologna with an inscription stating that it was made for an officer of Badr al-Din Lu'lu, ruler of Mosul 1218-59.

Although D. S. Rice suggested that the Bologna bowl was produced in Mosul, it seems more likely that it was manufactured in north-west Persia, perhaps Tabriz, as a special order for the officer, Najm al-Din 'Umar (The Arts of Islam, Exhibition Catalogue, Hayward Gallery, London, 8th April-4th July 1976, no. 192). There is also another bowl of this form in the Keir Collection, Richmond, (Geza Fehervari, Islamic Metalwork of the Eighth to the Fifteenth Century in the Keir Collection, London, 1976, no. 65).
