Footnotes

  • This drawing has been taken from the marble bust of Scott by Sir Francis Legatt Chantrey (1781-1841). The sittings for the bust took place in 1820 after Chantrey personally requested that Scott sit for him, despite having no commission for the piece.
Two autograph marbles of the bust were made, the second version being made for the Duke of Wellington for Stratfield Saye (1826). 45 plaster casts were distributed to Scott's admirers and several copies produced by other sculptors, so it impossible to say which version Thompson is copying from for this portrait.
