Footnotes

  • Sciuti’s decision to formally embark on an artistic career was cut short in 1852, when an eruption of Mount Etna destroyed his family’s belongings and personal savings. Sciuti found himself having to work as an assistant to a decorator, studying drawing and painting on his own. He eventually gathered enough money to go to Florence to exhibit some of his best paintings. He then lived in Naples where La Tentazione ensured him public recognition. He worked in Genoa and Milan before settling in Rome in 1875. The paintings by Giuseppe Sciuti are essentially based on historical and religious themes, which he treats with great realism following the manner of Cesare Maccari. Sciuti’s search for detail of execution and exactitude of subject is brought onto the canvas with a high degree of polish. His work has entered important public and private collections in Sicily, Italy and abroad.
