Footnotes

  • Exhibited:
London, The Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours, Summer Exhibition, 1910, no.35

Following the disappointing public response to her Venetian paintings in the early 1900s, Helen Allingham ventured out to the Dorset and Wiltshire countryside in search of subjects she was more associated with. It was there that she found many unspoilt thatched buildings belonging to large estates which had barely changed from the day they were built.

Living in Hampstead and a widow for some fifteen years, Helen Allingham was at the peak of her career and the demand for her cottage paintings was still strong. The publication of Happy England in 1903 and Cottage Homes of England in 1909, containing numerous plates by Allingham, provided an extra boost to the sale of her work.

We are grateful to Annabel Watts for her kind assistance with this catalogue entry.
