Lot 50
A Rare Pearlware Figure of the Duke of York circa 1800 31cm., (right hand replaced, other minor damage)

Sold for £ 1,762 (US$ 2,171) inc. premium
A Rare Pearlware Figure of the Duke of York
standing in full uniform, the garter star at his breast, leaning against a military trophy with a cannon, flags and cannonballs, all picked out in colours, on a grassy mound and integral square base,

Footnotes

  • Prince Frederick Augustus, Duke of York, the son of George III, followed a military career and was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. He enjoyed little success until the Peninsular War when the Duke of Wellington assisted him in the fight against Napoleon. This model is based on a Derby porcelain figure of the Duke of York from the 1790s. The Staffordshire pottery examples probably date from 1812-15. A very similar version is known with amended details to the uniform, omitting the garter star from the jacket. It is likely that this revised version was intended to depict the Duke of Wellington and an example in the Willet collection is identified as Wellington. Another example without the garter star is illustrated by Rosalie Sharp, Ceramics Ethics and Scandals, p.239
