C18th Irish blanket chest

A George II Irish mahogany and crossbanded Blanket Chest on Stand,
the rectangular moulded edge hinged top above a flame veneered front with two drawers to the base on a stand with a profusely carved rocaille foliate and scroll pierced frieze on short carved cabriole legs terminating in hairy paw feet,

  • Formerly part of the furnishings of Browne's Hill,Carlow, Co. Carlow Ireland.
    Browne's Hill was a distinguished 18th century house built in 1763 for Robert Browne (1729-1816) to the design of an architect named Peters. Some alterations were carried out in 1842, probably to the design of Thomas Alfred Cobden. Browne's Hill was sold by Lt.Col W.P Browne-Clayton in 1951. (see Mark Bence-Jones 'A guide to Irish Country Houses', revised 1988, Constable & Company Ltd).
    The Browne family arrived in Ireland in 1654 from Wickham in Buckinghamshire. They settled in Carlow and expanded their interests through marriage and investing in land. By 1879 they owned in excess of 12,000 acres in Carlow, Wexford, Dublin, Queens County, Kilkenny, Lancashire and Cheshire.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
