Louis XI style walnut writing desk

A mid Victorian burr walnut and kingwood crossband and gilt metal mounted Writing Desk,
the rectangular top with a pierced gilt metal gallery to the back and inset wtih a panel of tooled leather (distressed) above a pair of frieze drawers, on tapering gilt metal stop fluted legs headed by moulded tablets, with spool feet and brass cappings and castors, stamped to one drawer 'Howard & Sons, Berners Street' and with a paper 'Howard & Sons' label to inside of the drawer with ink inscription,

  • Howard & Sons was established by John Howard at 24 Lemon Street in 1820. By 1854 he was established in the heart of the West End at 22 and 36 Berners Street. They grew to become one of the most fashionable and successful of the 19th century. They employed their eclectic range of styles working for many important clients at import art houses such as Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire and Elton Hall, Hunningdonshire. Still fashionable at the end of the century they provided the fittings for Mr Vanderbilt's yacht.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
27.5% on the first £10,000 of the hammer price;
25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
