The Omega Speedmaster 145.022, dubbed the "Transitional Moonwatch," launched in late 1968 as the successor to the Apollo 11-proven 145.012. It introduced the reliable Caliber 861 manual-wind chronograph, replacing the finicky Caliber 321, to meet post-moon-landing demand while retaining NASA certification. Produced from 1968 to 1978 (with variants into the 1980s), it became the longest-running vintage Speedmaster, underpinning professional models for decades. Housed in a 42mm stainless steel case with lyre lugs, Hesalite crystal, and black tachymeter bezel (to 400), the tri-compax dial features sub-dials, tritium plots, and applied logos. Thousands were produced, but pristine originals—DON (dot over 90) bezels, tritium, or straight backs—are elusive due to servicing. The present example also includes an email from the maker confirming its authenticity and 1970s provenance. As a bridge from heroism to reliability, the 145.022 captures cosmic history of this iconic model, and is an essential example for enthusiasts of the Moonwatch.
