Footnotes

James Cagney was one of Gene Hackman's greatest inspirations; he even credits Cagney with sparking his desire to act: "From the time I saw my first movie as a boy, I wanted to be an actor...I loved Cagney; he was so different from anything I'd even seen...Cagney was New York, tough-looking, wise guy and cocky...as a young performer I realized why I liked him: he was the consummate actor." (Interviewed by Michael Norman, Hollywood's Uncommon Everyman. The New York Times Magazine, 19 March 1989).
