The thick silver swirls decorated with inset mother-of-pearl cabochons, signed Colonna, on a Macassar ebony shaft with a metal ferrule.

Footnotes

Edward Colonna (German, 1862-1948) joined Louis Comfort Tiffany's interior design studio after moving to New York in 1882. The protean designer later worked on railroad cars and train stations -- one of his sleeping cars even shown at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Colonna was also a leading designer at Siegfried Bing's Maison de l'Art Nouveau, designing jewelry, furniture, porcelain, and carpets, winning silver medals at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle and the 1902 Turin Esposizione internazionale d'arte decorativa moderna.

Jacquest Louis Georges Murat (French, 1851-1918) was the second generation of the Maison Murat silversmithing family. Murat obtained the Légion d'Honneur during the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle.
