Maison Edouard Delaunay
Founded in 1893 and revived in 2017 by Laurent Delaunay, the fifth-generation winemaker, Maison Edouard Delaunay has swiftly re-established itself among Burgundy's leading houses. From its cellars in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the Maison crafts finely detailed, terroir-driven wines across the Côte d'Or, combining artisanal precision with modern sensibility. The commitment to minimal intervention, small-scale vinification, and exacting parcel selection ensures wines of balance, purity and authenticity – reaffirming Edouard Delaunay's historical place at the heart of Burgundy's renaissance.
The Terror of Vougeot 1er Cru Les Cras
Among Vougeot's four Premier Cru climats, Les Cras stands apart for its refinement and minerality. The name derives from the Old French "craie" (chalk), a nod to the pale, stony soils that yield wines of notable tension and aromatic lift. Situated directly above the Clos de Vougeot, on the mid-slope's well-drained limestone and marl, Les Cras consistently produces wines of striking elegance: red and black cherry, rose petal and subtle spice wrapped in fine-grained tannins and a saline, persistent finish. In 2023, only one barrel was produced from this prized parcel, underlining both rarity and singular character.
2023 Vintage of Burgundy
The 2023 vintage in Burgundy marks a welcome return to balance and classicism after several years of climatic extremes. Despite a challenging flowering period and localized mildew pressure, the Côte de Nuits enjoyed a long, even ripening season under largely dry, temperate conditions. The resulting wines show purity of fruit, moderate alcohol, and subtle tannins – a vintage defined by finesse rather than power. The reds are perfumed and vivid, with poised acidity and precise terroir expressions, recalling the elegance of 2010 but with greater generosity of fruit.
