Born in 1939 in the vibrant neighborhood of Xipamanine in Lourenço Marques, now Maputo, Samate Mulungo embodies the spirit of self-taught artistry since 1952, when he embarked on his creative journey. His trajectory, marked by a significant contribution to the realm of contemporary painting, has unfolded over the decades.

Having dedicated many years to a maritime navigation company affiliated with the Ports and Railways of Mozambique, Mulungo ultimately embraced his artistic calling in 1972. A decision that catalyzed a notable evolution in his artistic expression.

His inaugural solo exhibition in 1959 in Lourenço Marques marked the genesis of a prolific career. In 1991, his artistic expertise was sought as a member of the jury for the "Heritage 1991" event at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, solidifying his international recognition.

Mulungo's work transcends the boundaries of self-taught art, offering a visually rich dialogue deeply rooted in Mozambican culture and experience. Unveiled to the public through his solo exhibitions, his oeuvre reflects a constant exploration of his artistic identity, oscillating between history and innovation.
